Gain experience during work placements

If you are interested in becoming an early childhood educator you first of all must have completed the secondary school. You can gain work experience by doing a work placement at the kihz and thus learn about what it entails to care for and educate pre-school children. If you do a good job during this work placement, you will be put at the top of the waiting list for a training opportunity at the kihz.

Early childhood education apprenticeship

The training to become an early childhood educator at a daycare centre is offered within the framework of an apprenticeship in early childhood education („FaBe“ – Berufslehre zur Fachperson Betreuung) and leads to a nationally recognised diploma. In the canton of Zürich this entails attending classes for one and a half days a week at the training centre Berufsfachschule Winterthur over a 3 year period and on the remaining weekdays working at a daycare centre under the supervision of a qualified trainer. The training can be done on a general level or in a specific subject area. Whoever wants to do their apprenticeship at one of our kihz Daycare Centres has to specialise in early childhood education.
The costs of the classes are taken on by the canton and kihz will contribute towards a part of the study materials as well as towards the costs of any other relevant coursework.

Abbreviated apprenticeships or further eductaion

For those students who are older than 22 years of age, the training can be cut back by a third. The requirement for such an abbreviated apprenticeship is that one has worked 60 % for a minimum of a 2 years as a carer for children, the aged or handicapped people. Furthermore, the student has to have completed a general education.

Mature students who want to refresh and expand their qualifications acquire the same skills as those doing the regular apprenticeship and the program leads to the same diploma. However, to qualify for this program one needs previous work experience of at least 5 years of which a minimum of 4 years was spent working 50% caring for children, the aged or handicapped people.
